10 ways to maintain healthy eating habits while traveling (or dining out)

I believe in indulging a little and treating yourself while on vacation, but I’m not a believer of throwing healthy habits out the window. I believe in mindful, intuitive indulgence instead.

Some of the reasons why people go rogue while on vacation is that they feel confused with how to maintain their habits, find it “easier” to just eat whatever, or deprive themselves too much pre-travel. Besides the fact that many vacations are often food centered, eating for pleasure is absolutely part of the joy of travel. There is a difference, however, between treating yourself and thoughtless eating. Just because something is available, doesn’t mean you have to eat it.

So what is the meaning of the phrase I’ve coined ‘mindful and intuitive indulgence*’? Generally speaking, it’s eating and ordering with intention and honoring your body and your needs. But I made it easier for you and broke it down even more below.

Here are 10 ways you can maintain your healthy routine and still have fun with food while traveling (or dining out in general).

  1. Do your restaurant research by looking at menus pre traveling. Pin or make a Google Map of all the restaurants, cafes, etc. that you can and want to dine at.

  2. Stop apologizing for your needs. Let go of the idea that you’re being difficult. There is no shame in altering an order. Many dishes can be modified or can have items omitted.

  3. When ordering an appetizer and an entrée, select one of the two to be healthy if you are indulging with the other. And, always order a side of veggies.

  4. Ask! In some places, things like V/GF/DF are not advertised even though they do offer it. Even the tiny tavernas I went to in Greece were extremely accommodating and understanding of my needs, so there is no excuse.

  5. Find a local health food store and stock up on healthy snacks (or bring them from home- I travel with my own matcha and 100% chocolate at all times). Bonus: If in a hotel, have housekeeping empty mini fridge and add your healthy buys to it instead. You can always buy a hot/cold pack as extra space if needed.

  6. Indulge mindfully. Know why you’re choosing to indulge. Don’t just indulge for the sake of indulging.

  7. Share dessert or choose healthier desserts. You can also alternate which days you order dessert. [If you are RSF like me, pre-buy a few healthy desserts and stick them in your room or kitchen.]

  8. If you consume alcohol: When having multiple alcoholic beverages, have a mock-tail or water between each one. You’ll realize you drink less.

  9. Don’t succumb to peer pressure or FOMO. Do you.

  10. Get creative. If you aren’t finding what fits your needs, there is almost always another option.
