When my healing journey first started, one of the first set of symptoms that hit were daily migraines for two consecutive months. Some days they were so intense I couldn’t leave my bed while other days I was able to push myself through and carry on. At the time, I had no idea what the underlying issue was.
Since then, migraines usually pop up when I’ve been in the middle of treatment and my liver is overloaded with toxins or I have die-off, or if my body is experiencing an ebb. Though I am more holistic when it comes to treatments and care, there are times where I do take migraine medicine if the pain is unbearable. However, if it’s a multi-day migraine where I cannot be taking pills daily or it’s a lower grade migraine, I try not to take anything and rely on my tools.
In either situation, I can always turn to my go-to migraine toolkit for when a migraine strikes. None of these get rid of a migraine on their own, however in combination can be helpful to get through it.
The Healthy Thing migraine toolkit
Ice wraps: I have two of these so I can switch them out when the coldness wears off. They are also comfortable to sleep with, stay super cold, and are honestly lifesavers. (I’ve seen ice caps which I am curious about however they don’t have the best reviews as of yet.)
A good eye mask: Needed to block light.
Earplugs: I use these if I have to go out because they are invisible and you can still hear what other people are saying . There was one point in my journey where I was wearing these daily for years because my sensitivity to all noise was on another level (even without migraines).
CBD cream: I lather this all over my upper back and neck and even on my temples. The arnica in it gives a cooling effect so it can be helpful in those trigger point areas. This one is my favorite.
Still point inducer: This was created based off the points used in cranial sacral therapy. “It can help relieve pain and discomfort by creating a pause called a still point to strengthen the central nervous system. In addition to a profoundly relaxing effect, the still point inducer also relieves headaches and muscle pains, enhances the immune system, encourages overall health and wellness.” -StillPointInducer
Acupressure clip: This rests on your hand and applies pressure to the L14 acupressure point which can be helpful for alleviating headaches. Or you can ask your spouse to massage the point for you too which is what I usually do :)
Magnesium: Low levels of magnesium can be linked to headaches and migraines. It might be helpful to take magnesium supplements or even better, get an IV drip that contains magnesium. Proper hydration is also key.
Coffee enemas: These alone have actually helped low-level migraines diminish. Toxins in the body can sometimes be the cause of migraines so flushing the liver and colon with a coffee enema can be extremely beneficial. (Details of why and how-to here.)
EFT tapping: I will sometimes do this multiple times in a row. Here is a brief explanation of it along withe the tapping chart.
Lymphatic Drainage massage: Toxin buildup or a stagnant lymph system is known to cause symptoms like headaches and migraines. Having a LD massage can be extremely beneficial but only if you can tolerate it during this time.
Herbs: Bringing in supplements like skullcap, white willow bark, feverfew are among some herbs that can be helpful for some.
It’s important for me to add that I often see lists of supplements online for migraine relief. I’ve taken A LOT of supplements in my lifetime and I have never taken a supplement that makes my migraine go away on the spot. Usually these supplements are needed longer term and remember, migraines are often indicative of other deficiencies or imbalances in the body. Please speak to your doctor to find what is best for you.
