Dirt, sprays (even on organic produce), germs (think about how many people squeezed that apple for freshness before you), and bugs (parasites people, parasites) are living their best life on our fruits and veggies. This makes it essential that we give our produce a good scrub down or bath before eating them, raw or cooked, whether we eat the skin or not.
Even things like avocados, oranges, and melons should all be washed before cutting into them, as bacteria can transfer from the knife to the edible part of the product.
A drop of food-grade Hydrogen Peroxide, juice of a half-full lemon (did you know lemon is a natural anti-microbial!), a splash of distilled vinegar, or produce wash can draw the bugs out, break down residues from sprays, and kill germs so you can eat clean. And please do not, I repeat, do not wash your produce with antibacterial soap!
